New board launched at Port of Hirtshals
New and familiar forces come together in a new board at Port of Hirtshals. Michael Lundgaard Thomsen of Aalborg Portland takes on a new term as Chair of the Board with the Mayor of Hjørring Municipality, Søren Smalbro, as Vice Chair. For the board, the coming years will be filled with a continuous focus on financial responsibility, stable development and the upcoming port expansion.
On 19 January, Port of Hirtshals welcomed the new board which brings together new and familiar profiles. The board has been formed with Michael Lundgaard Thomsen, Director at Aalborg Portland, as Chair of the Board. Together with the rest of the board, he is ready to continue the positive trends of recent years, with record revenues, increased activity and a strong focus on the upcoming port expansion.
- I am proud to continue my work as Chair of the Board of Port of Hirtshals. We have assembled a strong board with relevant competencies, extensive insight and broad experience. This is important in relation to the port’s overall operations and business development, as well as the upcoming investments in the port expansion, which must be managed securely in the years ahead, says Michael Lundgaard Thomsen, and continues:
- It is a task for the board, together with the port’s executive management, to ensure timely and financially responsible implementation of the expansion. We must strengthen the organisation to secure growth without compromising the solid results and positive customer experiences that are created every day by the skilled employees of Port of Hirtshals.
The gateway to Europe
Another known face on the board of Port of Hirtshals is Søren Smalbro, Mayor of Hjørring Municipality, who continues as Vice Chair.
- Port of Hirtshals is very important for Hjørring Municipality and for many of our good neighbours to the north. We are the gateway to Europe for many important stakeholders and have a fantastic port with an ideal infrastructure, says Søren Smalbro about the connection between Hjørring Municipality and Port of Hirtshals. In the coming years, he looks forward to a time with positive changes in the port landscape:
- I look forward to seeing action being put behind words. The coming years will be filled with comprehensive work to improve the entrance to the port, and it will be good to be able to see the visible results of all the work behind the scenes with the port expansion at Port of Hirtshals.
Research meets port operations
The board of Port of Hirtshals gains new competences with the appointment of Mai-Britt Beith, member of Hjørring Municipal Council and Second Deputy Mayor. In addition, Professor Michael S. Dahl from Aalborg University Business School joins the board. He is ready to draw on his expertise to strengthen the Danish port:
- I look forward to developing Port of Hirtshals together with the rest of the board and all employees. I bring experience and knowledge in strategy and finance. Through my work at the university, I have worked with business development for many years, and in this context the Port of Hirtshals is a key asset for both the town of Hirtshals and the entire Hjørring Municipality. The port must continue to play that role in the future.

The Board of Port of Hirtshals comprises four business profiles, three representatives from Hjørring Municipal Council and one employee representative. These strong profiles create a solid foundation for the port’s business decisions.
