EY Analysis: Port of Hirtshals Supports Thousands of Jobs – Port Expansion to Secure Future Growth
An analysis conducted by EY shows that activities at and around the Port of Hirtshals support the equivalent of 2,453 full-time equivalent jobs in Hjørring Municipality. This corresponds to almost 10% of the total employment in the municipality. The results demonstrate the port's importance as one of Hjørring Municipality's key drivers of economic growth while underlining the need for continued investment in Port of Hirtshals’ development and future capacity.
Port of Hirtshals is one of Denmark's leading commercial and transport ports. According to the EY analysis, activities at and around the port support 4,735 full-time equivalent jobs across Denmark, generate DKK 1.1 billion in annual tax revenue, and contribute a total gross value added of DKK 4.4 billion each year.
The findings highlight the port's existing contribution to employment, business development and value creation. At the same time, the analysis emphasises the importance of securing the port's future capacity through Expansion North.
According to the analysis, activities at and around Port of Hirtshals generate 2,453 full-time equivalent jobs within Hjørring Municipality, representing almost 10% of total local employment. These jobs are spread across a broad range of industries, including shipping, machinery and equipment repair and installation, wholesale trade and the fishing industry.
The analysis also shows that port-related activities generate DKK 2.6 billion in gross value added and approximately DKK 300 million in annual tax revenue for Hjørring Municipality. These tax revenues strengthen the municipality's financial capacity and help fund public services, local employment, development projects and infrastructure that benefit both residents and businesses.
The results further illustrate Port of Hirtshals' role as a strategic infrastructure hub linking Scandinavia with the rest of Europe. At the same time, the analysis highlights that continued investment in the port's development is essential to maintaining and strengthening the employment and value creation that the port already delivers today.
Port of Hirtshals is therefore continuing the work on Phase 1, Extension of the Western Breakwater, which will improve navigational conditions and enhance the port's capacity to accommodate future shipping traffic.

The analysis confirms that Port of Hirtshals is already a major driver of employment and economic value creation, both in Hjørring Municipality and across Denmark. It also highlights the importance of continuing to invest in the port's capacity to ensure businesses have the conditions they need to grow, invest and remain competitive in the years ahead.
